Artificial Intelligence refers to simulation of human intelligence and skills by machines. AI systems can perform tasks like learning, problem-solving, speech recognition, visual perception, decision-making, language translation and pattern recognition. AI is being applied across industries from healthcare and education to agriculture, finance, transportation and defense.

AI has become a strategic priority for nations due to its potential economic benefits. Accenture estimates that AI could add $957 billion to India’s economy by 2035, increasing the country’s annual growth rate to 1.3 percentage points by 2035. India was ranked sixth in AI readiness in a 2019 research study by Economist Intelligence Unit. The country has several key advantages that can power an AI revolution, if properly leveraged.

Advantages Driving AI Growth in India

  • Large talent pool: India has a strong information technology sector employing over 4 million workers. It produces large numbers of engineers, developers and data scientists who can build and deploy AI tools. Educational institutes like the IITs are bolstering AI research and education.
  • Massive datasets: India is the second largest internet market with over 687 million subscribers. Growing digital penetration in commerce, banking, social media, transportation etc is generating huge volumes of customer data that can train AI algorithms.
  • Government support: The government has identified AI as a focus area for the country’s digital growth. The National AI Strategy aims to make India a global hub for AI development and application by 2030. Policy interventions like the National Data Sharing Policy will accelerate AI innovation.
  • Cloud infrastructure: Technology giants like Microsoft, Amazon and Google have been ramping up their cloud computing infrastructure in India, providing storage and computing power to develop AI solutions. 5G rollout will provide additional infrastructure.

  • Cybersecurity risks: AI systems have vulnerabilities that can be exploited by hackers for surveillance, fraud, service disruptions etc. Data privacy issues also exist.
  • Job losses: AI automation may make lower-skill jobs redundant. India must proactively reskill and absorb such displaced labor.
  • Ethical challenges: Guidelines are needed to address issues like bias in algorithms, accountability for AI decisions etc to prevent discrimination.
  • Digital divide: The benefits of AI must reach all sections of society by addressing gaps in internet access, digital literacy, education levels etc.

India’s technology ecosystem has demonstrated capability to build globally impactful AI innovations like Aadhaar.
